Painting is exciting; to record in an artistic way a scene, or setting, to create a treasured memory, to capture mood and atmosphere. I enjoy the challenge, knowing the result is entirely my responsibility and the reward is a combination of seeing the finished work and hopefully to hearing that the painting is valued by the recipient.

I have always been interested in colour, observing the rising, or setting sun washing the landscape with a warm orange glow, contrasting with aubergine shadows. The monochromatic, stark contrast created by a recent snowfall under a leaden sky. Inspired by Norwegian topography and artists, such as Peder Balke, I specialise in painting landscapes, including the beautiful English Lake District and Cumbrian Fells, where I live and work.  Other influences come from an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary artists and I have drawn inspiration from other vivid locations I have visited including Acapulco, New England, Colorado, the Arabian Desert, South Australia and Scottish Highlands.

I work in oils and can include buildings, or other structures as a detailed part of the landscape. Early in my career I developed a style by limiting the colour palette and creating mood through a combination of sepia tones, with varying degrees of detail within the same painting.

Always happy to discuss any ideas, just get in touch!
